 Chapter One 

The group of girls parted as two young men walked between them, some girls whispering excitedly while others scowled
but moved out of the way nevertheless.
“Excuse us, ladies,” the raven-haired boy grinned, winking. 
The excited whispers turned into giggling and the scowls were replaced with rolling eyes.
“Hey, Victor! Are you busy tonight?” called out a beautiful blonde.
Victor blew a kiss towards her laughing. “Sorry sweetie, but yes, I am.”
His best friend ran a hand through his crimson hair and smiled politely at a few girls that were giving him flirtatious
smiles. 
“Did we have to walk through them, Victor?” he whispered.
Victor laughed again and clapped a hand on his friend's shoulder. 
“I'm sorry Laurent.”
Laurent glared from under his long fringe. He didn't mind talking to girls – in fact two of his best friends were girls
– he just didn't want to make himself looks so...available.
Maybe because he wasn't.
Victor obviously didn't care, but Laurent knew that there was only one girl that Victor really had feelings for.
“Ah, how are my two favourite ladies?” 
Laurent rolled his eyes again. Did Victor ever stop?
“Very well, thank you Victor,” a light,musical voice laughed.
“Put a sock in it,” came the harsher reply.
“Aww, Mariette,” Victor draped an arm over the brunette's shoulder. “I know you love me.”
Mariette snorted, “Oh, you wish you big, hairless ratach.”
The ratach were big monkeys that resembled rats and were considered pests to the villages. They were ugly with their
long stringy fur and hideous without it.
“Ooh, ouch,” chuckled Victor. He draped another arm over Constance, Mariette's sister, smiling warmly.
“How are you today, m'lady?”
Constance gave another musical laugh and courtesied, making Victor laugh and Mariette smile. Constance smiled brightly
at Laurent. 
“How are you, dear sir?” 
Laurent chuckled and bowed low. “Fine, thank you.”
“Alright, alright!” Mariette yelled, obviously trying to control her laughter. “Enough with the formalities. What are
we doing to day?”
Laurent shrugged and sighed. “I thought that we'd go for a ride on the dracrest, but Victor thought it would be
boring.”
Dracest. Beautiful creatures that resembled dragons. Graceful with a ferocity. Honestly, how could Victor call them
boring?
“You're the only boring one here, Victor,” Mariette snickered. “So what do you suppose we do on this fine day?”
“Well I certainly wouldn't waste it on you, Mariette Van Edmond.”
The group turned and almost groaned. It was no other than Jen Reisha – Mariette's worst enemy. en Reisha was a harsh
person. Beautiful, yes. Smart? Hardly. The reason Mariette was the victim of Jen's pointless insults all had to do with
hair. Ridiculous, yes? 
The people of Aetherius – or rather their hair – only had a variety of two colours for each gender and to have any hair
colour that was different from the usual colour was extremely rare – and immediately criticized. Blonde hair or bright
orange hair was the colour usually seen on females and crimson or black on the males.
So what was wrong with Mariette? 
She was a brunette. Not a light brown that glimmered gold under the suns, but a deep, dark brown. No doubt it was
beautiful, but it was strange to others.
“Forget to wash your hair again?” Jen smirked. The trio of girls behind her giggled.
“Ahaha, Jen, you're hilarious,” said Mariette, sarcasm dripping from her words. “I see you didn't forget to bleach your
hair”
Jen stiffened as a Victor laughed loudly. Jen had the typical blonde hair, though it was so light that it almost seemed
white. It had attracted jealousy and suspicion that it was bleached.
“You're just jealous,” Jen snarled.
“Break it up,” Laurent growled.
Jen flipped her braided hair over her shoulder and turned her attention to Laurent.
“Honestly, Laurent, why do you hang out with her?” asked Jen, batting long lashes at him. Laurent resisted an urge to
roll his eyes. Why him?
“Because,” began Laurent, trying to keep his frustration in check. “She's my friend.”
Jen sighed dramatically and twirled a stray strand around her finger. 
“Oh well, I thought maybe, you would want to hang out with us?”
“No,” Laurent said firmly, earning multiple cheers from Victor and Mariette.
Jen bit her lip and narrowed her eyes. She wasn't used to being turned down. Nevertheless, she turned on her heel and
stalked off. 
Laurent kneaded his forehead and sighed before turning to his friends.
“So what did you want to do Victor?”
