"A Dirge for Music"

I think of the rhythms we've lost
And the music we've forgotten
We mourn the passing of a swallow
But what of dying melodies
That no one sings or recalls
Drifting away in timeless halls
To slumber in our memory
What silent emptiness
Awaits our present course
If we can't remember the notes
And beats and belting sounds
Trilling up and tumbling down
Falling away as dropping leaves
The tree of life grows colder
With each faded tune and canto
(2002)
