"Mi Abuela's Tortillas"
(In Memory of Alexandra Rodriguez)

I have tasted my grandmother's tortillas,
A thousand times already,
Although it is true I never lived with her,
Yet I know them by their warmth,
Their buttery texture sticking to my insides,
I have tasted my grandmother's tortillas,
Because my mom makes them the same way,
She makes the masa from flour and cold water,
Salt and something to leaven it slightly,
She cooks them on a hot flat iron,
When I would not dare to touch the heat,
My mother grabs the edge with bare fingers,
Flipping them to finish cooking,
This is the way that Grandma taught her,
When she was just a little girl,
Thank you, Grandma, for this lesson,
And a thousand others--about the simple things.
