"Heartbroken Horse"

He lifts his head towards the empty road
Ears up and straining for the sound
Of gravel crunching beneath wheels
It's been so long since she's come again
In earlier days she came in the rain
Just to bring him the carrots he loves
And on hot days she would brush
His face with her own shirt
Happy to be dirty for him
On long rides she tugged his mane
And he cantered a little faster
She would walk him afterwards
And feel his heart
Until it was time to be rinsed
Her loving hands squeezing the sweat out
He made a commitment to her then
To love her always
Now he gazes down the empty lane
His large dark eyes very moist
He tries to hold his head high.
