I sat down on the old, graphitied seat, resting my hands in my lap. I tried not to show
how much they were shaking.
‘I’ve been waiting for you.’ He said so quietly that I almost didn’t hear him. His lips
barely moved.
‘I thought I was missing something.’ I replied, just as quiet.
‘Took your time. C’mon, let’s go. We’re already late.’
I glanced up nervously, ‘Go where?’
He shook his head, ‘And they said you were smart. Follow me.’
I hesitated. What if I never came back? But then, I’ve got nothing to lose, nothing to
keep me here. I stood up, ‘Okay.’ This was definitely a crossroads.
The old man reached out his wrinkled, veined hand. For a second I thought he was going to
hit me. But then he just grabbed my elbow and pulled me through an empty silver doorway
that had just appeared in front of us.
‘You might want to close your eyes.’ He informed gruffly.
I couldn’t close them. How could I stop looking at all these wonderful colours that had
suddenly surrounded us? It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen in all my 16
years. And then, the colours disappeared. A wave of disappointment flooded over me, before
I remembered where I was. Wherever that was.
‘I told you to close your eyes.’ Grumbled the old man, as I tried to get my eyes to adjust
back to normal. Spots of colour were still swimming in front of me for the next few
minutes as we began to walk. Once I could see properly again I recognized that we were in
a forest, trees were close and their branches hung down low. I could barely make out a few
patches of moonlight between the branches.
I realised that the old man was still holding my elbow and leading me along. I wriggled
out of his grip and moved a little to the left so he couldn’t hold onto me again.
‘I can walk by myself.’ I snapped when I saw his face. ‘By the way, you never told me your
name.’ I added, suddenly curious.
I could faintly make out the look on his face from where I was. His eyebrows had knitted
together and he looked straight ahead, as if he could see something I couldn’t.
‘Names are not important. You don’t need to worry about names.’ He finally answered. ‘You
just need to concentrate on where you’re going.’
‘But I don’t know where I’m going!’ I protested.
‘Then why are you here?’ His gravely voice sounded like it could have come from one of the
‘I-I don’t really know.’ I glanced sideways at him, and he gave me a look that the matron
would’ve given me if I had told her I didn’t know where the ‘detention’ room was.
I puffed my cheeks out in annoyance, just like I would’ve at the orphanage.
‘I wanted to get away. I had this…feeling. It was as if you were waiting for me. And you
I felt awkward, unable to express exactly what I had been feeling the past week in words.
He nodded, still looking off in the distance. ‘Yes. You’re not as stupid as you look. Or

I opened my mouth; I could feel my cheeks getting warmer and a slight buzz of
‘You really need to work on that temper too. You may be unique, but if you can’t control
you’re temper then they will send you right back. Now shush, we are nearly here.’
They? Me, unique? Nearly where? What had I gotten myself into? I don’t even know what I’m
doing! I get this feeling and all of a sudden I’m following this random hobo! This must be
a dream, all a dream.
Suddenly a hand shot out inches from my nose. I stopped quickly, nearly going cross-eyed
trying to keep my eyes on it.
‘This is as far as you can go, like this. Don’t worry, it shouldn’t hurt…much. See you in
a bit.’
Suddenly my head had filled with white hot bolts of fire, before the world went completely

I could feel myself swimming in and out of consciousness, but unable to move my body or
open my eyes. Sometimes I could faintly hear what sounded like parts of conversation, but
they didn’t seem to make any sense.
‘How much longer will this state last?’
‘Until they have finished the examinations, maybe a moon or so.’
‘That long? But they have never held a subject that long before…’
Dreams also invaded my mind, almost too real to be dreams at all.
‘Well she can’t have vanished!’ Screamed the head matron. For a moment I thought she was
screaming at me before I realized that there was someone behind me.
‘But she’s not anywhere miss. How ‘m I supposed to find ‘er anyways? She can never be
found unless she wants to.’ This voice sounded strangely familiar, but I couldn’t quite
put my finger on it. Turning to identify the speaker the dream was suddenly interrupted by
water. Water that was somehow all over my face. I gasped, trying to get back my breath,
and sat up. White walls swam into view and I had to close my eyes against the brightness.

‘I think that might have been a little bit too much water son.’ Came an old voice from
somewhere above me, it sounded like it was trying very hard not to laugh.
‘Okay Grandfather, I will remember that for next time, I guess. It’s just she has been
asleep for so long. I was afraid she wasn’t going to wake up.’ This voice was a lot
younger, and sounded a lot closer. I risked being blinded to open my eye a crack.
There was an old man and a boy, of about seven or eight, standing right next to my head. I
opened both my eyes for a better look. I jumped slightly, the old man was the hobo from
the bus shelter, I almost hadn’t recognised him. What was left of his hair was shiny
silver and he was wearing a grey suit. In his left hand he carried what looked like a long
walking stick, with a rounded bit at the top. This was also silver. His face was the
friendliest I had seen it, beaming down at the little kid.
I opened my mouth to say something, but I couldn’t think of anything. I was completely
The little boy patted my head. ‘It’s okay. They are all scared when they first wake up,
you will find your voice in a minute.’ His eyes smiled at me, a brilliant gold. I stood up
