Mountains close together form one huge wall,
And trees scrape the sky without being told.
And beneath, their roots will writhe, slowly crawl,
Reaching t'wards water that's painted with gold.

And you think you see a familiar shape
In the pictures the forest shadows weave;
Try to remember, but your thoughts escape,
And you're left questioning what you believe.

But on the far horizon, smoke has crept
Upward, poisoning the sky. They must build!
For too much time was wasted while they slept.
Their need to expand cannot be fulfilled.

Poetry lives here, not a city street;
Its binding roots can't push through the concrete.
