I was 14 when i was thinking a name of my weapon making of knives and swords
proffesion. I knew i wanted to put my name Jose in it. Since i don't know much
tagalog I went on google translater to get ideas on my name. Then it came to me. I
wrote weapon maker and the result became Armas Tagagawa. I am first known as Jose
Armas Tagagawa or Jose Arms Maker. Then I started self teaching martial art and when
i practice for a year i wanted to teach people arnis for free. Then i became Jose
Arnis Teacher. Both of these names explain my proffesion and I am know as JAT as my
pen name.
The very first weapon i made was a balisong knife trainer. I hade aluminum bars to
make as the two handles and a traingle door henge as a blade. I just created
something that was durable and cheap I was so proud of it i took it every where i go
to share it with everyone. Then I lost it. I made another one with a differet door
henge. After watching videos of knife making i plan on making a live blade. The
bladde was made of low quality electrical outlit plates and was unable to hold it's
edge and shape well. I made the same identical one as the second one so i can have 2
of them flipping on both hands. Then i gave one of them as a graduation present. The
one i have i improved the blade by making it out of a saw blade which was harder and
stronger and added a u latch on it. It had a tanto blade and could pierce a penny.
When i wanted a bente nueve i went to home depot to by the small steel bars to make
as handles and steel i had at home. It was the first time i had to drill holes on the
handles because the aluminum handles alreadt had holes on them. I had to be precise
to drill it on the center to each sides. The blade was the hardest to make. I have a
rectanglar pieace of metal and i had to grind and sand to form it shape and to fit
between the handles. I grind and sande it to a bowie shape and use the sander to
sharpen it. Then i created a T latch on it and the knife was made beautifully and
stong. Then i made a smaller verson of it to sell to someone and it was poorly made
and sold it for $10. I have a balisong-comb that i got in China town for $13 that has
a geisha on the handle. I didn't like how the latch was manila so i hope of breaking
the handle pivots that holds the blade and handle and place the handles to a batanga
latch and put new screws and washers on it. I have prove that not all chinese made
stuff break down because of its bad qualitty but the owner that takes care of it and
how they know how to repair. The last aluminum handle balisong was given to a friend
and sold it for $8. The bentenueve and the comb still remains with me.
