yay chapter four! :D
Sitting on a bench near the cafeteria, Avery flipped open her cell phone for the
third time. Where is he? It was fifteen minutes after school had gotten out,
Zane should have been there by now. Two more minutes, that's all he gets. She
sat there for about a minute and a half, and was getting up to leave, when she heard
"Avery?" She turned around, only to see Zane on his skateboard, rolling towards
"Glad you could make it." She tried to make herself sound mad, but it didn't sound
convincing. All she wanted was to talk to him.
"Look, I'm really sorry. I got sent to the counselor so she could talk to me about
my first day."
Avery smiled. She, along with everyone else, hated the counselor. "That sucks." The
two started to walk out to the parking lot. "You want to go grab a snack, so we can
"Sure, can I get a ride?" Avery nodded, and they continued their walk to her car in
silence. As they climbed into her white Honda Civic, Zane thought about what he was
going to say. It's going to be really hard to tell her, but she has to know. It's
not like her mom won't eventually tell her-it's better to hear it from me. The
car ride was filled with silence, as neither of them knew what exactly to say.
"Taco Bueno okay?" Avery asked as she pulled in to the parking lot.
"Fine with me." They went inside, ordered, and sat down. For a few minutes, they
discussed random stuff. Avery realized that Zane was avoiding the main topic.
She interrupted him in the middle of his description of whatever it was he was
eating. "Okay Zane. I have to know why you're here. Obviously, it's something pretty
big, because people don't just move across the country for the heck of it."
He took a deep breath. "Alright. Swear you're not going to get mad?"
Confused, Avery answered, "Swear."
"Well, first off...um, my parents got divorced." Avery was shocked.
"Oh, Zane! I'm so sorry." She wasn't sure what to say, but Zane continued.
"Thanks, but..that's not why I'm here." Again, he inhaled deeply, then sighed.
Might as well get it over with. "Avery, have you ever heard of Camp Skywood?"
She shook her head 'no'. "Um, it's an all-boys camp, and my mom sent me there. It's
about twenty miles away from here."
Avery didn't seem to understand. "You're here for camp?"
"Not exactly. Skywood's not really like a hiking, camping, canoeing type of place.
It's more of a.." He paused, trying to think of the right words to say. "It's...well,
basically it's-it's a place for kids with substance abuse problems." Zane looked down
at his food.
Avery's eyes widened. "W-what? Did you just say-" Her phone rang, and it was her
mom. She ignored it, and looked over at Zane, who was just picking at his food.
"How?" she questioned.
Zane kept his gaze down at his plate, but started to speak. "When my parents got
divorced, I started hanging out with a bad group of kids. I...got caught at school
with some drugs a couple of months ago." Damn, she's going to hate me now. It
took Avery a few minutes to process this information, and she just sat there, not
really moving a lot. "Avery? You okay?" She nodded slowly. "Look, I can't change what
I did. But that doesn't mean that I don't regret it. I hate myself for doing that.
I'm not even sure why I did it."
Avery got up from the table. "I'll be right back," she said slowly. And with that,
she walked to the restroom.
