I hear the sound of the intercom beeping. I tune it out; continuing on with my work,
thinking about what Alex told me earlier. The teacher calls on me. I look at her
expectantly; taking in her clothes for the first time that day. The same as always. A
black pencil skirt, with a white blouse and black heels. Boring. Someone should
introduce her to Stacey and Clinton from What Not To Wear. That fashion show
on TV. The one where they throw out just about all of the person’s clothes. She
should be on there.
“You’ve been called to the office.” Ms. Dillards says with a tone that suggests
that I may be slow. I nod, walking up to the front of the classroom and grab the
yellow, worn out, what should have been laminated, hall pass.
I use the walk to the office to continue thinking about Alex. I didn’t know what I
was going to do about that. All too soon I’m facing the office door. I open the
door; the surprise of my life standing just a few feet in front of me.
“Miss Hanik, thank you for coming. As you see, we have a new student and I was told
to inform you of his arrival. His name is- -”
“Julian Underwood.” I finish for her, looking at the guy in question.
“Yes, he’s from - -.”
“He’s from California. Yes, yes..I know. I’ve..talked to him before.” I cut
her off again. I’m still looking at Julian, not noticing the cold look she is
giving me. I run over to him, giving him a hug. I’m in shock right now. I can
barely think. I pull back from him, red from embarrassment.
“I’m sorry, but - - who are you?” His voice is deep and apologetic.
“It’s me. Aubrianna, Brianna, from that one game site.” I tell him, hoping he
remembers me. It takes him a moment to realize that, in fact, it was me. I had
colored my hair, but he hasn’t seen a picture of it yet. He pulls me into a hug and
I return it. I smile, happy that he remembers and that he was here, but it leaves me
curious as to why. He never mentioned his leaving to me.
I open my mouth to say something, but the office lady coughs and I step out of his
“Well, I see the two of you know each other. I gave him the same schedule as you,
the two of you need the same classes. There also happens to be a locker available
next to yours. I believe that is all.” She turns to leave. “Oh, and his books are
right here.” She hands him a small index card with a number on it and left, leaving
us all alone. I stand here still in shock, not knowing what to say. He coughs and I
snap back into reality. “So, um, let’s go.”
I go over to the counter where they placed Julian’s books at and grab a few, he
gets the others.
“So, how have you been?” I ask shyly, we haven’t spoken for a while now.
“I’m okay.” He answers. “I’m kind of shocked that we ended up in the same
place considering you never told me where you lived, let alone what school you went
“Yeah, I agree.” It is a shock considering we met online on this game site. We
have been talking for a few years now.
“How have you been?” He asks me.
“I’ve been ..okay. A lot has happened in the few weeks we hadn’t talked.” I
don’t go into any detail and he doesn’t push it.
It’s kind of awkward walking down the hall with him. I don’t even know what to
say. We reach the lockers and true enough there was an available one next to mine. We
put up the books; he didn’t need any of them yet. We start to head to our third
period class; math. There was only about ten minutes left anyway.
The silence is slightly uncomfortable. How can we not have anything to say to each
other? We’ve known each other for almost four years. Four years! And we don’t
have anything to say to each other.
We talked every day online. We always had something to tell the other, whether it was
important or not. But now, standing here with him, we have nothing to say.
I look over at him. He’s tall, about 6’2” compared to my short height of
5’6”. He’s on the tan side. He has dark, almost black hair that reaches just
below his ears. He’s wearing some black, loose jeans that looked really delicious
on him, a fitted, dark green shirt that showed his muscles, and some black
“Like what you see?” He asks, turning towards me, a smirk evident on his face. I
blush at being caught, but I say nothing as I caught his green eyes with my own green
“I don’t blame you. I do look good.” He says winking at me. I shudder and
smile, blushing even more. He looks more than good to me, he looks delicious.
“I was just merely looking at you. To see what you look like, you know.” I say.
He shoots a disbelieving look my way. “You’ve seen pictures of me. You knew what
I looked like.” He says.
I nod. “But pictures are not the same as the real thing.”
“Yeah, yeah. Whatever.” He says as we stop right in front of the door of the
I give him a look that says, “We’re not through with this.” He smiles and nods,
winking again. I shudder and mumble “prat”.
“What was that?” He cups his ear in my direction. “I’m afraid I didn’t hear
you.” He smiles again, showing his A-perfect smile. I bump into him and blush once
more and wish I hadn’t done that. It sent shivers through my body. I open the door
and walk though. Everyone stops talking and looks at us. Well, at Julian. I take him
over to Ms. Dillards' desk; introduced him and such. She gives him the welcome
speech. Blah, blah, blah…
As we go to our desk; the bell rings, signaling it’s time for the next class, in
our case, lunch. I pack up my books and walk out the door, pulling Julian along with
“Hey! You don’t have to pull me.” He almost yells.
“I know.” I say to him, sending a smile his way. “Come on. I have to go to the
lockers and then met someone.” We walk back to the lockers and I put my books up.
Shutting my locker, I turn to him. “Do you remember that guy I told you about?” I
ask him. He nods. “Okay, good.”
