A/n: This is the 4th time I've tried to copy this, but for various reasons
in my life, I wasn't able to finish. Sorry for taking so long to get this finished,
but please remember I have a life to contend with. V_V''
As the group rode into Solem, they could feel a haunting silence laminate over the
town. Mana was expecting it to be a bit more lively, despite it's depressing name.
She examined the streets as they rode through the town. Most of the buildings were
made from stone, with wooden doors and window frames. Mana quickly noticed that
nearly all the windows were boarded up, and the doors were locked tight. She could
see light Grey smoke slithering out of mis-shaped chimneys, as if it was afraid to
show itself. It seemed like the townsfolk were under siege, though Mana couldn't
understand why. She looked up at Eichiro uneasily, who was riding on Taheiji next to
her. His face was a mix of emotions, from shock, worry, and wonder. When he saw Mana
staring at him, he tried to retain a straight face, like nothing was wrong.
You can't hide it, Eichiro. I can easily tell something is wrong.
The overcast day gave the city an eerie brown glow. The hooves of the horses and
Taheiji's thumping paws echoed throughout the streets of Solem, waiting for a
responding sound. When they were well into the town, they could hear the sounds of
people up ahead. When they turned another corner, they could see what looked like the
Larger buildings then the houses lined the streets in the Square, and in the center,
a large fountain stood. It looked like it hadn't been used in years, for it was bone
dry, and weeds and ivy grew on top of it.
They could immediately see where the sound was coming from. About 30 feet ahead of
them, two soldiers wearing light armour and helmets that shielded their eyes
struggled with a medium-aged woman wearing torn clothing. They were the first life
Mana had seen in this town so far. The struggle wanted to make her rush ahead and
stop them, but a warning glare from Eichiro halter her. Taheiji suddenly took a few
steps forward. The thumps from his paws got the attention of the three. The guards
stood up straight, with one of them holding the woman. Eichiro sat up, looking tall
and proud on Taheiji's back.
"What gives you the right to harass this woman?" He said as bravely as he could.
"That's none of your concern. Now, what are you doing here? The law forbids travelers
to enter this town."
The woman took the distraction and broke free of the guard's grasp. She ran down the
way they came, presumably to her home. She looked to Eichiro, who seemed surprised
about what the guard said.
"When was this law enforced?"
"Last year. Go home, travelers. You're not welcome here."
The group started staring at each other, not sure what to do.
"I'm sorry, I did not know of this law. I just have a friend here in Solem I wanted
The guard paused.
"...That's understandable. Fine, just this once, I'll allow you to go see your
friend. But you can't stay more then a night. If we find you here tomorrow, we won't
be as soft."
"Let's hope not."
The guards ran down the way the woman went, and the group continued more into the
Square. When the guards were out of earshot, they started talking again.
"I wonder who's giving them their orders. Eichiro?" Sera pondered.
"No, they weren't mine. Did you see their helmets? The knights I chose weren't afraid
to show their faces."
"Then whose are they?" Shiki continued.
"I don't know, but something about this makes me worried. Anyways, the person I want
to see lived there before I left, let's see if he's still there." Eichiro said,
pointing to a large building to their right. Only one of it's two front windows were
boarded up, which gave it a sense of a bit more hope then the other buildings. The
group said nothing, as Eichiro dismounted Taheiji. He motioned for Mana to follow
him, and for the others to stay for a bit. Mana dismounted Aya and followed Eichiro
into the building, whose door wasn't locked shut, just closed. As Eichiro pushed the
door open, Mana could hear the hinges creak open; it seemed like it hadn't been
opened in a while. As he closed the door behind them, Mana took a look at the room
they were in.
It was a large room, particularly messy. The walls were lined with bookshelves,
filled up with books, loose papers and other small things. At the back o the room,
there was a desk, and two arches on either side, going further into the building. The
room seemed to have a brown glow, draining most of the other colours.
Mana could hear voices coming from the back rooms.
"...I heard the door. What should we do?" A young female voice asked.
"Tell 'em we're all outta hangova cures!" A man with a thick Scottish accent
responded. Mana flinched, confused. There was crashing sounds in the background, and
a young woman walked out of the right arch. Her hair was dark brown, cut in an uneven
bob. She wore a beige dress with a thick brown apron on top of it. She looked down,
not taking a look at them.
"I'm sorry sirs, but the boss says..." She looked up before she finished her
sentence, and realized she was talking to two young teenagers.
"Oh, I mean... T-Teren! They're real customers! They're travelers! I've never
seen them before!" She called back to the man, now identified as Teren.
"Travelers?! Are ya outta yurr mind, Hwaga? The law banned..." Teren climbed out of
the back of the building, with a confused face on. Teren was a few inches shorter
then Hwaga, but about 5 inches taller then Eichiro. He had shaggy brown hair, and
wore a burgundy suit.
Teren stared at Mana and Eichiro, in thought. He made his way through the stuff on
the floor until he was close enough to talk comfortably.
"...Yurr face looks familiar." He said to Eichiro. "Do I know ya from somewhere?"
"Teren, it's me, Eichiro!"
Teren's eyes lit up.
"...So it is! Eichiro, m'boy! You've grown! It's so good to see your face again." He
said, his face wearing an overjoyed grin. He then turned to Mana.
"And who be this pretty lass? Yurr girlfriend?"
"No!" Mana and Eichiro cried in unison. Teren jumped.
"Eh...this is Mana, she's traveling with me, along with some other new friends."
"Tell them they can all come in! I want to hear about what you've been doing for the
past four years, m'boy!"
