Where I’m From

I’m from a place where my family isn’t my family
	My sister is an outsider
My step dad is not blood
	My brother, only half mine
5	My dad might as well had been lost in the flood

I am from a place where I feel best alone
	Nose tucked in a book
Or whispering to myself in senseless drones
	My pen is my weapon
10	My feelings written on paper
	Some lost in the ocean
Of wadded nonsense strewn about my floor

I am from headphones and sheet music
I’m from eighth notes and half rests
15	I’m from the callouses on my fingertips
And the melodies drilled in my head
	My idols covered in tattoos
Singing to me till they take their last breath
I am from untuned strings and cracked keys
20 Staff lines and treble cleffs

I’m from the crooked cross at the altar
The spilled holy water in the pews
I’m from the lies I tell myself
	And the religion I refuse

25	I’m from the slobber on my face
And hair sticking to my clothes
The unconditional love I am given
And the kisses on his cold, wet nose

	I’m from cookies and fudge
30	And homemade noodles in the morning
I’m from Christmas decorations up on November 1st
	And month-long birthday celebrations
I’m from standing at the bedside
Aiding her in recovery every day
35	And wheeling her out of the hospital
On that warm day at the end of May
	I’m from long awaited hugs
	And breakfast at 3am
I’m from long stays at the airport
40	Just to see her face again
