Listening to the song 'Everybody's Fool', by Evanescence, and it just clicked that,
even though it's (I think!) meant to be about a boy and a girl, it also sounds to me
like Susanne talking to her daughter
when she's pissed off and not entirely
sober. Here are some of the lyrics...
"Perfect by nature
Icons of self indulgence
Just what we all need
More lies about a world [girl] that
Never was and never will be
Have you no shame? Don't you see me?
You know you've got everybody fooled
Look here she comes now
Bow down and stare in wonder
Oh how we love you
No flaws when you're pretending
But now I know she
Never was and never will be
You don't know how you've betrayed me
And somehow you've got everbody fooled.
Without the mask,
Where will you hide?
Can't find yourself.
Lost in your lies!"
Anyway, on with the story!
"Er, mum... Maybe you've had enough of-"
"Get off of me, Aaron!" She swung an arm at him, which he nimbly dodged, pushing his
sister back as he tried to prise the glass from her hand. "Leave me alone! I want
to talk to her..." Susanne's voice with seething with emotion, and none of it good.
Sadness still present from her husband's death, but most prominently, anger. At
everything there was to be angry about.
Aaron frowned, looking slightly hurt. He swallowed, nodding and leaving the room,
leaving his sister and mother alone.
Kari stood by the door, pinned perfectly still by her mother's gaze. At seventeen,
she was about the same height, but Susanne Longacre somehow made size irrellevant as
she took threatening, lunging paces towards her daughter. "It's because of you."
She snarled, still advancing as Kari backed up.
"What... What do you-"
"YOU KNOW PERFECTLY WELL WHAT I MEAN."
Kari flinched, shaking her head, "I-I don't..."
"You're meant to be intelligent, Miss Perfect." It certainly wasn't a
compliment. She spat the word out, making it as venomous as possible. "You're the
reason he's dead. You might've convinced everyone else, but not me... Oh no, not
me..." She reached out, pushing Kari's shoulder until she was against the wall.
"You're no child of mine. You betrayed him. His little Princess." She sneered,
throwing back the dregs of her wine and dropping the glass to the floor, "You're
nothing to me. Never was, and never will be."
Kari shook her head, wishing that she could find the willpower to break their
"You've stolen his eyes. You pathetic girl... Useless. Can't do anything. God
knows why Johnny adored you so much... Had him fooled too, yeah? So perfect, so
"Mum, stop it, you're scaring me..."
"That's because you're PATHETIC." She screamed the words, pushing Kari hard before
stepping backwards in disgust, "Just because everyone else worships you and your
perfection, I won't. You haven't fooled me. You betrayed him, and you betrayed me.
Kari stood against the wall, shaking both with fear and tears.
"GET OUT! I NEVER WANT TO SEE YOU AGAIN!" Susanne fell back in her armchair, taking
another gulp of wine from the bottle, since she'd dropped her glass.
Kari fled from the room, running past her brother and pushing him aside, "I'm going
"Kari? What happened? I heard shouting-"
"Leave me alone! I'm leaving. I'm going to Oxford next week anyway, I'll move in
now..." She shrugged her coat and shoes on as she spoke, "I'll buy new things..."
Aaron pulled her into a hug, "I'll visit you, okay? I'll bring your stuff. She
didn't mean any of it..."
"She did. You know she did."
"Don't go, Kari... Please?"
"I'm going. Goodbye." She stood on tiptoes to kiss Aaron's cheek, and left, closing
the door softly behind her.
