It was the end of the month and it was nearly time to leave America.
"That month went so quickly," said Gwen, zipping her suitcase shut. "I can't believe
we're leaving already."
"I know, it only seemed like a week," Ella glanced out of the window. A plane was
flying across the beautiful sunny sky.
"That'll be us next," I said, leaning on the balcony. "Oh, I can't wait to get home
but I don't want to leave America."
"You're thinking about Matt again, aren't you Nikki?"
"Matt?" I said, as if Matt was just an odd dream I'd had. "Why would I be thinking of
"Oh..I just...never mind," said Gwen, she picked up her suitcase. "Well, shall we go
and check out then?"
"Uh huh." I nodded as we walked out of the beautiful hotel room for the last time. I
gave one last glance back at it and then closed the door behind me. We walked down to
the ground floor and to Reception. The receptionist smiled as I handed in the room
"I hope you've enjoyed your stay here," she said. "Are you going back now?"
"Yeah, but I wish we weren't," I said sadly, handing over a cheque. "It's been such
"Bye," said Gwen as we pushed the door open and left the hotel. The receptionist
waved and smiled, and then started serving the next person waiting in the queue.
We walked all the way to the airport because we had already given our car back to the
firm. As we entered the huge airport, I took one last look around the street. I
didn't know when I was coming back - or if I was coming back. I wanted to stay
there for a bit, but Ella and Gwen were already at the desk.
"Come on Nikki," Ella called. "We're not going to be allowed in otherwise."
I sighed and then made my way over to the airport desk. I handed over all the tickets
and things and then we entered the waiting area. Sitting down on the red chairs that
were provided, I looked out of the window. It was so beautiful.
"Shall we go and get something to eat?" I asked, looking over at all the food places
"Yeah, let's," said Ella. "Our flight isn't for ages yet - we have loads of time!"
Gwen got up too. "Ok, come on."
We walked over to a shop called Hot Crust. It sold bagels and things like
that. I handed the shop assistant some money and we all got some stuff to eat.
It was now time for our plane to leave. We all boarded it, taking magazines and
Ella's laptop. We were all sat together in one row. I took a sweet out of my pocket
as the plane flew off. I leaned forward, looking out of the window. I took a last
look of America - well, I didn't know when I was going to see it again - and then
leaned back in my chair. I think I slept for most of the journey, because when Ella
finally woke me up she said we only had an hour left. I looked out of the window. We
were over the sea!
"Wow, look!" I said.
"Ohmigosh I haven't slept this entire journey," said Gwen, rubbing her eyes.
"Woah, I can imagine," I said, rubbing my eyes.
The plane landed after about 45 minutes. I rushed off the plane and there was my Mum,
"Hi," I said breathlessly, giving her a hug.
"Oh baby, how was it?" she asked, tears in her eyes.
"Mum can you not call me baby please?" I hissed. "But anyway, it was great! I didn't
want to leave!"
"You haven't got hooked up with anybody there, have you? Because I don't want to
spend a fortune on long international phone calls."
"No, I haven't," I said firmly, pushing Matt out of my head. It was as if I was
locking him away in a little secret room in my mind, and throwing away the key. I
turned my head to see Ella and Gwen with their families too. Gwen's Mum was all
dressed up in jewelery and things.
"Did I tell you I won $1000 while we were out there, Mum?" I asked.
"No, but come on, let's get in the car. You can tell me all about it when we get
I smiled. Waving Ella and Gwen goodbye, I got into the car. I knew this holiday would
be a memory forever. Would we go back? Maybe, but that would be on another
