When I finished The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, one theme
that seemed to appear again and again stayed in my mind: realization always seems to
come after you have left something. When the Little Prince left his planet, he’d
gotten bored. When he left each planet, he’d felt that the planets had already
grown old to him. When he left the pilot, the pilot only felt sad that the Little
Prince could not stay and fear of what would be happening when the Little Prince was
to leave. But true realization never happened “on the spot”; it was only after
the Little Prince had left his planet that he realized how careless he had been to
leave his precious flower alone with “four ridiculous thorns to defend her from the
world.” Only after the Little Prince had come to earth did he truly think about
each inhabitant of the planets. Only after the Little Prince left did the pilot truly
understand how deep his feeling for the little prince was. It seems as though leaving
always triggers understanding.
