They love to live vicariously through and otherwise manipulate children, don't they?
The following is an accurate depiction of what the "defining adult forces" in my
life are saying to me.

Mother: You know, honey, you should do whatever you want to do, and you
can't work in a career that you don't like, but I really think you could make a huge
difference in the sciences. Just keep them up for now- you don't want to throw away
your potential.

History teacher: Man, you need to go to law school! It would be such a
huge waste if you don't! Like seriously, run for office and I'll manage your
campaign, and if you don't get in just go back to making $500 an hour. You would be
such a good lawyer.

English teachers, plural: You are one of the best writers I've ever
taught. You should pursue graduate work in English.

All: You should go into [profession] because I think it's the
best choice for you.

Haha, yeah. Teachers see one side of you, one teeny tiny facet, and
they think it's your life. As for my mother, I don't know where that
came from because she knows I hate math and am not a big science fan
either.
I respect people's opinions, but would really appreciate if they
didn't tell what I should do with my life.
