Remember riding the ponies at the fair while your father held your hand?
Remember your mother cradling you against her?
Remember when your parents were your whole world?
Remember when the greatest mistake you ever made was tracking mud in the house?
Remember how fun it was to get an ice cream cone?
Remember how you used to roughhouse with your parents?
Remember going barefoot in the summer?
Remember the smell of freshly-mowed grass on a warm summer afternoon?
Remember the awe of seeing a new baby?
Remember when you were scared of the monsters beneath the bed?
Remember when the darkness was your only foe?
Remember when you hated to wear all those clothes?
Remember not caring a whit what the world thought of you?
Remember the floaties you had to wear in the pool?
Remember loving everything with all your heart?
Remember when you couldn't understand why your mother hated for you to get dirty?
Remember when everyone was a potential friend?
Remember your great adventures as a pirate? As a superhero? As a detective?
Remember when the doctor was only good for the lollipops he gave?
Remember the delicious pies you used to prepare in the sand?
Remember trying to stay up all night so that you could see Santa Claus?
Remember when your greatest triumph was getting to put out the cookies on Christmas
Remember how getting a bath was the absolute worst thing?
Remember when your birthday was the day you waited for all year?
Remember how your mother coddled you when you got sick?
Remember the feel of the snowball between your tiny hands?
Remember all the cover your mother made you put on before going out to play in the
Remember your father holding your hand while you walked in the park?
Remember when your father wouldn't let you go after you fell and skinned your knee?
Remember when your mother was all the comfort you needed?
Remember the fun you had at the family parties?
Remember when your favorite food lie in the cookie jar?
Remember the joy of finding the brightly-colored eggs on Easter Morning?
Remember when nothing tasted so good as a piece of candy?
Remember how you and your mother giggled over your Halloween costume?
Remember when you could talk to your father about everything?
Remember when the ladybugs and butterflies and snails and dragonflies were so
Remember how hard you cried when your father pulled a splinter out?
Remember the peaceful summer evenings cradled between your parents?
Remember jumping into the pile of leaves?

I wrote this little piece because I am constantly reminded of the things I miss from
my childhood. I am so saddened that most of these things are so alien to me now when
before they would have been second nature.
