I knocked on the lab door. "Dad? Daddy? Papa? Are you awake?" I heard a grunt from
somewhere within. I sighed and pounded again. And again. How much can this lazy beast
sleep through? I thought to myself. "Whatever. Breakfast is outside, if you're ever
going to get up." I briskly walked into the kitchen to finish my breakfast. And then
I saw the clock. "Oh crap, I'm late." This was the fourth time and I was going to get
a lunch detention. Not that Dad even noticed. Or cared, for that matter. Ever since
my mom died, my dad had locked himself up in that lab of his and stayed there all day
and into the night. I barley even saw him any more, and I had no idea if he had quit
his job or gotten fired, but he definitely wasn't a lawyer anymore. I hopped on my
bike and tore down the street. By the time I had gotten to school, I thought, it
would be about 7:40, ten minutes after the bell rang. I pedaled faster. By the time I
got to school, there was not a singled car in the lot, but another bike, only a few
feet up ahead. "Hey!" I shouted to Sam, my best friend. She turned around and jammed
on her brakes, causing a collision. "You scared me out of my wits!" She yelled. "It's
not my fault you heard!" I shot back. "Samantha's my name, listening is my game," she
said. It was true. Sam was a really good listener. Whenever you needed somebody to
just shut up and listen to you, Sam was there. Besides that, her name actually did
mean listener. It came from an Aramaic word that means listener. "Let's just go," I
said. "We're late." "What do you expect?" Sam asked. "We're always late." This was
true. I only started being late when my mom died. My dad refused to drive me, and
didn't seem to care whether or not I went to school, so I just kept getting up later
and later. Sam was just always late. And, well, let's just say we collided. As we
walked through the halls, I brainstormed ways to get out of trouble. While I was
thinking, I practically ran into another person. It was a guy.
