I look around the rather large airport, scanning the unfamilar faces for Megan.
After a two hour flight, I had finally arrived in San Antonio, only to walk around
the airport for twenty minutes looking for my new guardian. I sigh and walk over to a
row of blue chairs and plop down in one, exhausted from having been walking around in
circles. I think for a couple seconds before reaching into my carry-on bag and for
the slip of paper with the Cain's phone number scribbled on it and a quarter. Picking
up my bag once again, I walk over to the pay phones and start to dial the number.
"Casey?" A deep, southern sounding voice asks from behind me. I whirl around only
to find about six foot of pure male muscle. I swallow hard and tear my gaze away from
his white t'shirt incased chest long enough to meet his mossy green eyes and nod.
"Thank goodness. I thought I was never gonna find ya, darlin'." He says with a
relieved grin, his deep southern drawl sending shivers up and down my spine. He gazes
down at me, openly studying me up and down in silence.
"Ryder Cain, your escort for the day. Welcome to Texas, darlin'." He finally says,
eyes sparkling with either amusement or mischief. Possibly both.
"This her?" A miniature version of Ryder, but with brown eyes, asks as he strides
over to us.
"Yep. Jesse, this is Casey. Casey, my little brother Jesse." Ryder introduces
politely, grinning the entire time. I laugh, unable to stop myself.
"Whatcha laughin' at, dumplin'?" Jesse asks with the same southern accent as his
"Nothing. Just that he called you his "little" brother." I explain, laughing again
at the absurdity of it. They both look at me like I'm mental. I sigh and step over so
that I'm standing directly in front of Jesse. Ryder, obviously quicker to figure
things out than Jesse, starts laughing along with me. His laugh reminds me more of
thunder than laughter though. Jesse continues to stare at us quizically. Ryder sighs
and steps behind me, laying his large hands on my shoulders and gently shoving me
forward until I'm nearly against Jesse's chest.
"Her head barely comes to your shoulders, see?" Ryder asks patiently. I can
practically see the lightbulb clicking on in Jesse's head. His mouth forms an "o" and
he starts laughing, his laughter almost matching Ryder's, but not quite. I wait until
he stops laughing before talking again.
"How old are you, anyway?" I ask curiously, eyeing the two's obvious resemblance.
"I'm nineteen and this baboon is seventeen." Ryder answers as he playfully slaps
Jesse on the back. Jesse glares at him before turning back to me.
"And how old are you, sugar?" He asks, studying me up and down much the same way
Ryder had earlier. This time I was the one doing the glaring.
"Seventeen, too." I reply, still glaring at the two.
"Oh, great. Another teenage girl to take over the bathrooms." Ryder says, teasing
smile on his ruggedly handsome face.
"Another?" I ask curiously. Do they have another pregnant teen with them?
"Yep. Hannah's only sixteen though." Jesse answers, obviously pleased with
himself. But for what, I have no idea.
"Is she as tall as you two?" I ask, trying to lighten the atmosphere of
"Nah. She's actually a couple inches shorter than you. Go figure." Ryder teases. I
"Come along, oh giant ones." I tease back, walking towards the luggage place to
get my luggage, obviously. Once I locate the three suitcases I'd brought, I hand one
to Jesse and the other two to Ryder.
"C'mon, let's get the midget home before mother dearest sends out a search party."
Ryder says, smirk firmly in place. I roll my eyes and follow the two out of the
airport. This should be an interesting couple of months.
