Chapter 1:It Starts With a Girl named Yvonne
Have you ever wished to celebrate everyday as your last? I sure have..
Sometimes, I wish all of my troubles could go away and just live life the way I
intend it to be. Today is March 11, and I slept in this morning. Apparently, I was
late for school..again.So I had to change into my plain old uniform and ran out the
house with a piece of toast in my mouth, as usual. "Scott Oonishi, you better be home
by six!!!", my rapid mother screamed as she threw a slipper at me. Fortunately, I
shut the front door before it could hit me.
As I walked my way down to school, I saw those two girls talking to each
other and walking down the same path to the same school. Maybe I should--nope, I
better get to school.
I thought today would start like any other day, but it doesn't when you meet
a five-foot tall teal-haired girl that you don't even know clinging to your arm.
"May I help you??", I asked kind of sounding appalled.
"Sure!", the girl cheerfully exclaimed as she looked at me with her golden eyes,"I'm
Yvonne!', she smiled drawing her hand out.
I studied Yvonne for a while. She was a pretty short girl, flat, wore a little
white kimono, had long and straight teal hair, and a pair of golden eyes. Her face
had an adorable appearance; not sweet as in "love at first sight", but just cute.
"R-Right..", I replied. I guess i was supposed to shake it, so I just did.
"Hey, do you wanna be friends??", she asked out of nowhere. I had a feeling that
things were just about to get weirder. With that innocent face, there was no way I
could reject her in the genereal public. I mean-- what was I supposed to do.
"Uhh.. sure, why not?", I said getting a glimpse of a clock,"Listen, Yvo-"
"-You can call me Enette if you'd like"
"Okay, Enette, I have to go now, so.." I tried avoiding the situation.
"Where are you going?", Enette asked.
"School? Where else??"
"That sounds fun!"
I really don't know how longer I was gonna keep up with this, so I just kept
"Is school far from here?"
"What's your name?", she finally asked.
"Scott.", I answered flatly.
"You don't talk a lot, don't you Scott?", she remarked.
"Shouldn't you be somewhere?", I began to ask.
"You looked a bit lonely back there, so I came to join you."
I just realized she was following me.
"Hey look, a bird!", she gazed with awe at the sky.
"How ironic..", I sighed.
"I guess we're here. You should probably get going-"
"This is school??",she asked.
"How long are you going to be here?"
"I dunno.... 8 hours?"
"Okay, I'll meet you here!BYE-BYE!", she waved right at my face and ran off.
Seriously, what the heck was that all about? I don't even know the dude, and
she still followed me here! I should really stop talking to strangers.
It's 3:17 pm and I just walked out of algebra class. I should get home before
my mom kills me-- well that can't be good... There she is again, standing beside an
apple tree, waving like crazy. Please, don't tell me she's been waiting behind
that tree all day..
"SCOTT!", she called in a loud tone, catching everyone's attention as they look back
at me. This is just humiliating.. I face-palmed, already seeing people talking. So I
decided that instead of ignoring her, I should go up to her, since eveyone already
knew that she knows me.
"What are you doing here?", I quietly asked.
"I came back in exactly 8 hours like I promised!", she said in her usual upbeat tone.
Wow. She actually calculated her time.
"Let's go!!", she cheered grabbing my wrist.
"Ch-Chotto matte!! Where are we going?!", I asked.
"It's my turn to take you somewhere new!!", she smiled at me.
-The Place Where She Wanted to Take Me-
"Where are we??", I asked.
"Why do you sound like it's such a bad thing?", Enette asked then pointed to a
fern,"Look- isn't it beautiful??"
"What? That? It's just a fern; nothing quite special.."
"Yeah it is!", she clenched both fists under her chin,"Haven't you noticed that this
plant isn't really planted around here??"
"Err.. I guess?"
"I think it's a fine plant.. in fact, I think it's the prettiest of all!", she said
Note to self; she's good at keeping track of time, but she's not like a lot of
"So.. was this all you were trying to show me?"
"Yeah, isn't it great?!"
"Uhh..You've already asked me that...", I said making a sweatdrop.
"Okay, then. I guess you can go home now.", she said.
"What did you say?"
"I said 'you-can-go-home-now.'"
I can't believe it; this weirdo is really starting to piss me off.
"See you tomorrow!", she waved as she began walking away.
"Ch-Chotto!", I tried running after her,"So you just take some stranger by the hand,
follow them to school, wait for them after 8 hours and show me this just to
waste my time?!? If you ask me, you're pretty insane!!"
"I'm sorry if you felt like I was wasting your time, but is there something wrong
with making friends?", her smile reversed into a frown.
"That's not my point!", I said trying not to raise my voice,"If that stranger weren't
me, they could've hurt you! Why would you even think of doing that to
"Maybe because that's a risk I'm willing to take."
"What?" I couldn't believe it. She actually sounded...sane,"Risk?But-"
"People won't take risks unless what they believe in is worth doing."
"Then that's the value of putting yourself in danger?!"
It was too late. I had already raised my voice, and she seemed rather scared of me.
As much as I wanted to apologize to her, she said,"My days here are numbered."
"I don't understand", I told her,"Why do I feel like you're not telling me something
"Scott, I have Cystic Fibrosis"
"Cystic Fibrosis has infected one of my lungs. Don't you see? I'm ill.", her
expression changed to worried."I'm sorry if I've been a burden to you since the miute
we met, but I promise I'll leave you alone if you'd like-"
"What are you saying? I should be sorry..", I responded with guilt. But still, I was
pretty amazed; even though her expression was saddened, she managed to keep that
smile on her face.
"But there's still something I don't understand.. why me?"
"I already told you; I thought you needed a friend, so I came to help you!"
"Uh-huh!", she nodded with a grin.
"Tell me; after all you've been through, why do you keep smiling like that?"
She thought about it for a second, then said,"Even though my time is limited, I
guess enjoying the rest of my life is all I should do left!"
I didn't know how to respond, so I remained silent.
"Maybe I'm not as smart as I could be, but this is the path I was put on, and I have
two directions:I could live in despair until my hour comes, or just do what a lot of
kids my age have always desired of experiencing. Maybe I won't be so lucky in the
end, but I'll be grateful for whatever happens now."
"Making new friends and filling in their last requests...that's all I want to do
until the day I die."
"Geez, Scott. You ask sooo many quesitons~", she said running off.
Thinking about all that she's said to me that evening had made everything so much
clearer. The reason to why she could tell time. The reason why she likes meeting new
people.The reason to why she tries making the best of everyday;
Maybe I can learn a thing or two from her.
