“Go on,” Ms. Black said. Jim was frozen solid as if she didn’t have a jacket
in Antarctica. She never performed for a live audience, or at least a class. She felt
the knot in her throat tighten as she thought how to begin.
“Okay, This is a perfect example of butterflies in the stomach,” Mrs. Black
told the class, ”Just think of a loved one or a boyfriend or something. It
helps.” With that, Jim thought of recent events with Kelsey Turner.
“Silent night,” Jim Finally began, “Holy night.” Her voice was as smooth as
a fresh cut gem. “All is calm. All is bright. Round yound virgin, mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild.” Here it is, she thought, the high note!
I can’t do it! Then Kelsey then popped into her mind. “You can do it!” He
was saying. All right Kelsey, I’ll do it. “Sleep in heavenly peace. Sleep
in heavenly peace.”
“Bravo!” Mrs. Black clapper, “Well done. And you hit the high note just
right! And that last note… Bravo!” Everyone was clapping. But Jim’s mind was on
Kelsey. Sadly this thought was washed away by the voice of Miss Snob.
“My turn!” She gave Jim a light push. “Watch and learn,” she said and then
whispered, “your lucky my mother is here, or I’d tell you what I really thought
of your ‘performance.’” Jim shook her head as she walked off stage. Cassia was
officially promoted to Princess Snob.
