Kari stepped onto the dias, fiddling nervously with the hem of her black tartan
school skirt as her music teacher came and adjusted her microphone. He gave her an
encouraging wink before jogging back around to the grand piano, the steps of his
hobnailed boots echoing throughout the church. She tucked her hair behind an ear as
she searched the attendants of the lunchtime concert for the one familiar face. The
one she's secretly dedicated her song to. Yes, it might have been slightly lacking
in modesty on her part, but every other word of it was true.
She made eye contact with Salem as the piano started, and after eight bars of
introduction, she came in;
"It must have been cold there in my shadow,
To never have sunlight on your face,
You were content to let me shine.
You always walked a step behind.
So I was the one with all the glory,
While you were the one with all the strain.
A beautiful face without a name.
A beautiful smile to hide the pain."
She smiled at him gently, feeling herself flush with both the embarrassment of the
confession and of singing in front of a crowd of no fewer than a hundred.
She took a careful breath and pitched herself before starting the chorus, directing
this clearly to the boy at the back of the church.
"Did you ever know that you're my hero?
You're everything I would like to be.
I can fly higher than an eagle,
For you are the wind beneath your wings.
It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
But I've got it all here in my heart,
I want you to know I know the truth.
I would be nothing without you.
Did you ever know that you're my hero?
And everything I wish I could be?
I can fly higher than an eagle
For you are the wind beneath my wings.
Do I ever tell you, you're my hero?
You're everything I wish I could be.
I could fly higher than an eagle,
You are the wind beneath my wings.
You are the wind beneath my wings."
