It had been a week since Opal had run away. No one had come looking for her, because
after all, no one cared. She had hid in the woods behind a burger shop, where she ate
the burgers people threw over the fence. She knew she wasn't having a healthy meal,
but at least it was keeping her alive.
One evening, around six o clock, she heard a rustling in the bushes. She stepped
back, wondering what it was. "Hello? Is anyone there?" she called out, then hid
behind a tree. After a few minutes, the rustling stopped and out trotted a little
sandy coloured puppy.
"Aww!" she came out of her hiding place and went over to the tiny dog. She stroked it
gently and then fed it a biscuit. It had no collar, so she decided it was going to be
hers, if it stayed. She said softly, "I'll call you Lucky. You can be my little good
luck charm, since I don't have anything else and you're just so cute!"
She layed down in her sleeping bag as it grew dark. Little Lucky settled down in a
ball at her feet. She smiled and then snuggled into the bag. Her eyes felt heavy and
she closed them, falling into a deep, deep sleep.
After a few hours, she was woken. She could see torch lights and shouting! She
scrambled out of her sleeping bag and beckoned to Lucky as she hid in the bushes.
Lucky sat at her knees as she sat down, looking up at her with big brown eyes. Opal
reached out to stroke her, not making too much noise.
Suddenly, the other bushes parted and a crowd of people came through. Police.
"She's probably been here," they said. "Look at this sleeping bag!"
Opal peeped through a hole in the bushes. Her Mum and Gary were following the police.
They weren't crying or anything, they just were putting on concerned faces. Opal
gasped and hid further down. Lucky did the same, copying her new mistress.
The police searched the surroundings but didn't come to Opal's hiding place. When
they went away, Opal crawled out and saw that her sleeping bag was open. It had been
searched through. She smoothed it out and then lay back down in it.
Lucky curled at her feet once more and she fell asleep again, but she didn't know
what she was going to wake up to...
