Can someone please tell me what the deal is with tipping in America?? Not so much
the gesture, more so the fact it's pretty much compulsory, and if you don't, you're
seen as rude?! If someone goes above and beyond to help you out I can understand, but
to expect a tip from everyone you serve....I dunno it just kinda defeats the purpose.
If you're expecting a tip it's not really a tip is it?!?!?

An episode of 3rd rock from the sun lead me to posting this (AWESOME SHOW BTW), plus
I haven't written anything for ages.

we're poor, a majority of americans don't tip lmao
only reason people do for no reason is bc they wanna show they have
yeah, people tip to be nice, but mostly ^
it's part of culture

People tip in the UK, too, but it isn't seen as such a compulsory
social gesture like it is in the states. I'm not really educated about
it, but I guess it has something to do with the fact that the minimum
wage over there just simply isn't enough to get by for most people who
work in that environment. Therefore, tipping is kind of a big deal.

Although I'm not saying this kind of thing doesn't happen over here,

Yeah that's what I was thinking too..... Idk, I'd want them not to
expect anything though, then be happy and gracious when they get a
tip, so it's more genuine. It almost dehumanizes the whole experience
when the workers just assume there'll be a tip.

waiters' salaries are purely tips
unless it doesn't meet federal minimum wage
then employers fill the gap
mminimum wage is only like $7 and some change
not nearly enough to afford a decent living
especially up in the northern states
I was looking at apartments in my area the other day
& I'd need around $3,000 for first & last month's rent
all of which is expected to be paid upfront
I think that's why it's such a big deal here

Yeah since I wrote this I've become much more aware how little some
people are paid! It's sad to think they rely so much on tips just to
make a living.....
