Stop for a second, and look at the shy girl in the back of the class. See how
quickly she looks away? Ever noticed her staring?
She likes you.
You ignore her, and proceed with your day. You go ahead and ask out popular,
Right in front of her.
Amanda says yes, without hesitation.
She dies every time she sees you together. She loses a piece of herself,
a piece of her mind,
every second of it.
You kiss "flawless" Amanda [who spends an hour every morning to look like that],
right on the lips. She wilts.
One day, you walk home from school and realize... she wasn't at school. The quiet
presence at the back of the room was the thing that was missing. She's not there the
next day, or even the next. You don't care to ask anyone what's up with her.
One day, you see her out grocery shopping. She takes a deed breath and approaches
you. "I wasn't at school because I was depressed." She looks you meaningfully in the
eye, and you realize how her eyes are a warm brown, with a ring of bluey-green, like
a river running through a forest.
"I didn't even notice you weren't there." You don't know what forced that ugly line
out of your mouth, but her eyes well up and she dashes away. How could you?
Amanda doesn't interest you any more. All you can think of is her... with her
silky dark hair, forest eyes and shy, sweet smile.
But... I really should tell you...
You hurt her so much, that she moved far, far away. And there's no way you could ever
get her back. You're too late.
The ones hiding in the corner are the ones who need to be found. And maybe by you.
Because the best things that you've gotten in life are the one's you've worked for
