Jimmy Korne hit the brakes the moment he spotted the deer in the headlights. The
animal rose from the bushes and seemd to float over the hood and roof of the car. The
station wagon's front wheels skidded in the loose gravel on the edge of the road.
Jimmy spun the steering wheel and tried to straighten the locking wheels, afraid of
the steep ravine he knew he was headed for. The nose of the car dipped as it went off
the shoulder, and Jimmy instinctively grabbed the steering wheel with both hands,
braced his arms, and pressed back against the seat. He was going to crash! The car
sailed out into space, then tumbled end over end. It struck a ledge ten feet down
with a force that knocked the breath out of Jimmy. He heard the awful, rending crash
of torn metal and was thrown across the front seat. A numbing pain tore throush his
right are as it struck the partially opened vent window on the passenger's side. The
wagon continued it slow-motion fall, bouncing off the lege, turning turtle, and
sliding down the cliff face upside down.
