Chapter 1 - Why
The girl sat there against a tree, humming quietly to herself though she was not
alone. Her yendou, a ball of energy that has a mind of its own, was resting on her
shoulder and the beautiful white horse that she knew so well was lying by her side.
“Why?” She said
The horse looked at her companion and the yendou listened intently to its masters
“Why am I here?” She continued. “Why must I stay and protect Zenrai Forest.
What is the meaning. Why me?”
“What strange questions. Tell me is something troubling you.” Said the yendou.
“No, my dear friend.”
“Then why all the questions?”
“I just feel that I deserve to know.”
“And that you do” The yendou said. It took a deep breath and began. It had not
planned to tell the girl quite yet.
“You have already answered your first question my dear. You are here to protect
Zenrai Forest but why you do it is not so simple. When you look at the forest what do
“I see peace, hope and freedom.”
“I don’t know.”
“Balance. What happens inside the forest affects what happens outside the forest.
If a tree dies then a human will and if a leaf falls before it is due an animal
would, and vice versa.”
“So if a human dies then so will a tree.”
“Precisely my dear.”
“But I don’t get it humans die every day so why are there so many trees? I know
there is a lot of people in the world but wouldn’t the forest die off?”
“What also happens every day?”
“Babies are born.”
“ Exactly. When a baby is born a seed shoots through the ground and one day that
will turn into a tree. Do you understand why you protect the forest now?”
“Yes. By protecting the forest I’m also protecting the living beings outside the
“You learn fast dear child.” The yendou was very proud of this girl. “We have
also covered the meaning. Why you, well that was just a cruel twist of fate.”
The girl looked up at the sky. The sun was setting.
“You had better go now,” Said the yendou. “It will be nightfall by the time you
reach your home.”
“Okay,” Said the girl. She stood up and picked up her bow and quiver which was
full of sharp arrows, all with a silver point. She put up the hood of her long black
cloak and climbed onto the horse that was read to go. The girl realized that she had
forgot to ask a question.
“Why can’t I fall in love?” The girl asked.
“You will find that out by yourself, my dear,” Said the yendou
“I’ll see you tomorrow, friend,” The girl said to her friend and off she rode.
Her and the horse travelled far through the forest until they reached the edge
where the horse stopped. The girl jumped off.
“Don’t worry. One day you will see the outside world. I promise,” And with that
she ran off home and the horse went back into the forest. The horse and the yendou
could not leave the forest as they protected it also.
