It was the third day we had been in America. We couldn't do anymore shopping. Our
money was running out fast. I hadn't seen Matt.
As we were driving back to the hotel at lunch, Gwen was checking her reflection in
the mirror. Suddenly she gasped.
"Nikki?" she said, her voice shaking.
"Yeah?" I asked, turning round to face her. Then I saw it. He was back. The man. In
the car. And he was chasing us again!
"Step on it!" cried Ella and I stamped down hard on the accelerator. The car speeded
off ahead but the man did the same. His look was fixed on me; I could see it in the
mirror. I stifled a scream with my hand while my other hand was on the wheel,
swerving the car wildly to avoid nearby cars.
"Are you OK, Nikki?" asked Gwen, squeezing my hand.

Gwen sighed and leaned back against her seat. Ella was leaning forward on the back of
"We've gotta try and keep calm, OK?"
"What do you think I'm doing, putting my make up on?" I replied, my teeth clamped
"Just a few more miles, then we'll be back at the hotel," sighed Gwen, acting like
she wasn't bothered about the could-be killer that was only a few metres behind us.
"He could follow us in," I pointed out.
"How do you even know it's a he?" asked Gwen. "That is sooo sexist. But, like, a
compliment to girls at the same time."
"This isn't the time to be discussing this," Ella said.
"I know, but like, it's a compliment!" insisted Gwen.
Ella sighed, being the grown-up again.
"Come on, we're nearly adults, we should be acting more mature than this!" Ella
I looked back. He was still there...
