Orthodox culture...Easter WeekendCategory: (general)

Yay! Easter is coming! I just thought I would like to add this entry to share with
you my culture and what I do for Easter. :D

Many Orthodox fast before Easter, and are not allowed to eat various foods such as
meat, butter, milk as well as olive oil for the last few days. But, I usually
just stay away from meat. I have been eating spaghetti for the past week... D:

Well, on Good Friday (tomorow) we all go to the church to walk around it.

Church starts at 7:00pm, but I usually get there at 8:00pm with my family. We go
inside the church and buy five candles (there's five members in my family) to 'light
the way'. Then we stick them in the sand. Then before we go into the actual area of
the Church we make the Orthodox cross in front of Virgin Mary in a picture. We then
listen to the priest for about half an hour 'till it is 9:00pm.

At 9 we all go outside and make way for the priest to bring out the large cross with
flowers. Then we walk around the church with candles. Once my brother nearly burnt my
hair with his candle, but that's nothing got to do with what I am talking about. o.O

On Saturday we go to Church again to crack eggs.

At 11:00pm we go to Church and wait outside until 12 with unlit candles. Before
midnight we all sing Greek traditional easter songs. When midnight arrives we all
light our candles of the Holy Flame. As everybody does this fireworks and crackers go
off. Woop! ^___^

Easter Sunday the family gets together.

When you see a Greek family I bet you think 50 people in the one house. My family is
different. My mum has no brothers or sisters so we have a smaller family. On Sunday I
am going to my cousins house to celebrate Easter and his birthday. We are having a
BBQ at 2 (hey it rhymes! ^___^). We eat lamb on the spit (I am not very fond of
seeing the lamb on the spit. I am truly against animal cruelty and I love animals!
D and dyed eggs. Before the red eggs are eaten you must crack them against your
friends or family, and whoever wins by having a whole egg at the end, will get all
the luck.

I guess that sums up Greek Culture for you! :D

Our family goes to curch on Good Friday, then on Easter sunday we hunt
for (plastic) eggs and our Easter baskets. Then we go to my grandmas
house to eat.

Your way is cooler.

We go to church Good Friday, and then the whole family will go to a
hotel for a couple days, and our mom will hide all of our candy and
gifts around the hotel room.
