After my interesting night with James I woke up feeling warm and happy, which was
strange as I hadn’t felt that in a long while. I had a long penetrating shower and
stood under it just to feel the pressure of water upon my back. After stepping out I
saw myself in the mirror, and was not displeased with what I saw.
Apart from the slightly smudged left over eye makeup under my eyes, my body was
slim. Slimmer than I had remembered, my legs long as ever darkening with the summer
sun and my almost skeletal shoulders contrasted with the ripe curve of my breasts. My
eyes seemed brighter, my lips softer but something was missing. My feeling of
security perhaps, I realised that within a few weeks my best friend Milene would be
Whilst getting dressed for school I clipped my hair away from my face and wondered
how I would cope. It seemed unthinkable having to face the ‘Uglies’ all alone,
with no-one to confide in. I felt a tear run down my cheek and as I was called down
for school I wiped it away with my shirt sleeve. I had to go to her leaving party, no
Sitting in Biology I looked upon my rather plump teacher, Mrs. Barnes and
wondered if she ever had a teenage infactuation. Her hairy lip and large behind
didn’t seem like she would’ve been ever like me, and I laughed to myself at the
thought of it. My thoughts were then interrupted by the frivolous giggle from
Victoria and her group of immature friends. I sighed at their appearance. Victoria (
the queen bee) was rather large, too large for her hitched up school skirt. Her plump
fingers had aqquired long false nails and her eyelashes clumpy, thick mascara.
Her friends were a-like, but slimmer but all with the same dyed blonde hair. I had
never understood why this hair was a fashion, I wrinkled my nose in disgust. Suddenly
I had realised I had drawn the unwanted attention of Victoria, her pig squinted eyes
looked me up and down. She grabbed a peice of scrap paper and threw it at me, I
unwillingly read it. Upon the crumpled paper was ‘YOUR A LOSA’. Her friends
laughed idiotically, as I read the badly written note. Never the matter I said whilst
throwing it in the nearest bin, who has the beautiful boy next door to him? Victoria?
I smiled at this and continued with my work, he seemed to brighten my days
At lunch I saw Milene, she looked tired and quite irritated.
‘What’s wrong?’ I questioned, I received no answer.
‘ I have one more day,’ she replied. ‘and you can’t
come to my party. It was going to be great you know, my brother he was inviting his
‘ I’m coming’ I interrupted.
‘How’ she said while squinting her big blue eyes,
‘I’m sneaking out, I wouldn’t miss It for the world’
I said taking her hand, I squeezed It hard.
After hearing the complete details of her party I knew I couldn’t miss It.
Although most girls were going just to see guys, I was there for Milene alone. That
was for sure. As we walked home together we stopped off at our favourite hang-out and
bought two milkshakes. It was nice. As we discussed our problems and interests,Milene
bit her lip.
‘We can visit eachother, y’know.’ She said bending her
‘I know’ I said smiling, ‘ I’m just gonna miss you.’
That night before going to bed I looked for my James. He wasn’t there, I waited
an hour. He didn’t turn up, so reluctantly I closed the curtains and went to bed,
preparing myself for sneaking out to Milene’s party the next day. That morning I
woke up energized, but confused. Where was he? Why hadn’t he come to see me
yesterday? I put these thoughts to the back of my mind and lay in bed.
‘Astrid!,’ said my mother coming in without knocking,
‘I know it’s a shame you can’t go to Milene’s party, but you know its for
your own good, right?’ she said patting my shoulder whilst sitting on my bed.
‘I know’ I said solumnly
‘Okay then, what are we having for breakfast? We’ll
have a movie fest today, seeing as you can’t go out’
‘ I’m okay mum, but thanks for trying’
As my mum furrowed her brow she left me to be alone. After a long while of
doing absolutely nothing I went to my computer for some much needed net surfing, when
I got a call from Milene.
‘ I’ll meet you outside my porch at 11pm, okay’ she
said quietly, ‘ Can’t wait’ she giggled
‘Can’t wait either’ I replied honestly. I was looking
forward to this party. It was going to be great.
Slowly, slowly 11 grew closer and closer. I took time applying my makeup doing my
hair and choosing my outfit, eventually deciding on a white silk camisole top with a
cute jacket and some shorts with reasonably high heels. I was ready, and without
another word, I slipped out whilst my parents argued in the kitchen. I knew I would
get in trouble, but I didn’t give a damn. This was my night, and Milene’s of
