Know what annoys me? Can you take a guess? I bet you can, it's NATIONALISM, folks!
From patriotism to fascism, it all sucks.

Imagine if I said... I'm proud to be white. Chances are people would feel a bit weird
about that. Why? Because it implies that white people have something over other
ethnicities. Aside from that not being true, even if white people did do something
worth being proud of, that doesn't make me one of those people. In the same way that
it's not Tony Blair's place to apologies for slavery (not that he shouldn't, it'll
pacify a lot of people), it's not at all fair for me to boost my ego off the back of
other people's achievements.

Same for nationalism. Britain... well... I'm struggling to think of something British
to be proud of, aeroplanes I guess, we make some good aeroplanes. So I come out
saying "I'M PROUD TO BE BRITISH, WE MAKE SUCH EXCELLENT FLYING MACHINES", but the
fact is I'm making a fool of myself by claiming that I had anything to do with those
aeroplanes (I didn't). Sure, if I contributed to their creation, I could be proud of
what I'd helped to achieve, but I didn't, so I can't.

Same goes for gay pride, black pride, national pride... all of you, STFU and find
something other than your labels to be proud of.

I'm a hypocrite, of course. I do believe that pride has a point in some places, and
it can be useful for some purposes (though there are usually better methods). Namely,
self-esteem. When you live in a place where you are oppressed, or your self-esteem
has been shot through, then pride in whatever the attribute they oppress you for is a
good thing because it can bring groups of people to a stage where they may fight
back. Nationalism is almost never helpful here, gay pride and racial pride might be
sometimes. A better thing to have would be a sense of camaraderie within a group,
because racial/gay/nationalist pride very often leads to prejudice and discrimination
and excludes people outside of your class (so they may not assist, gay/straight
alliances have the right idea).

A final word: If you've read this and still hold such pride, at least have the
consistency to be proud of it all. Be proud of aeroplanes, or the achievements of
Martin Luther King Jr., but also be proud of the slave trade, and the Rwandan
genocide.

Yeah... if you never hear from me again I've been picked up by MI5 for dissenting,
and perhaps given a job at MI7

Hmm Yes I think I agree. I think people who hold themselves to much
on being a 'minority' can sometimes put barriers up against other
cultures. For example Wales , whenever you here someone talk about
being Welsh on TV they are always talking about how they are a
'minority' which yes , they are I suppose but it makes me feel like
they don't like other cultures and I would not be 'welcome' in their
country.

From what I've heard (I live quite close to the boarder and I know a
few people who visited Cardiff Uni) English people are often unwelcome
in Wales, some pubs will chuck you out if you're English.

Very interesting to read, and I have to agree.
Pride can only be taken to far, and a person should be proud for what
they did, not for who they are, 'cause everyone is different
anyways.

I THINK I AM GOING TO ANNOY STEVE.

I'M PROUD TO BE A BLACK GAY PRESIDENT :D

There.
Haha >:D

I think you're right tho'.
People are always saying they're proud to be British, and I have to
retaliate by saying "But I'm not proud to be Ukrainian :|".
Steve's right.
And he shall be taken by MI5.
