I sat down in a booth in the coffee shop an hour later. I waited patiently, sipping
on the hot cocoa I had ordered when I'd walked in. Finally, he walked through the
door and walked cautiously over to my booth.
"Um, hi." He greeted me and slid into the chair opposite mine. I gave him a shy
smile and then began my little interrogation.
"Why didn't you tell me you were engaged?" I asked casually and took another sip out
of my stirafoam cup. He shifted uncomfortably and I almost grinned.
"Why did you want to meet me hear?" He asked, obviously trying to change the
subject. I didn't really give a crap why he didn't tell me so I let it go.
"Oh, just to give you some exciting news." I said mysteriously.
"Oh, yea? What would that be?" He asked, sounding a little too sure of himself. I
waited until he took a long drink of his coffee before replying.
"Oh, just that you're going to be a daddy." I answered innocently. And just as I'd
been hoping, he spit hot coffee all over himself.
"WHAT?" He all but screeched once he could talk.
"You. Are. Going. To. Be. A. Daddy." I said real slowly, emphasing each word. And
then before he had a chance to say anything else, I stood, grinned, and walked right
back out the door to my car. When I looked back through the window at him, he was
still just sitting there, staring at something only he could see. Well now that
that's over with, I have to get to class. I was in my second year of college and my
first class started at noon. I pulled into the college's parking lot at exactly
11:50. I grabbed my books out of the backseat of my car and made my way to my first
class. I had wanted to be a journalist since I started writing in the third grade. My
first class was rather boring. Shakespeare. What a winner! Well anyway, I slid into
my usual seat in the back of the room and waited for class to begin.
"This week we will be breaking up into couples and performing scenes out of one of
Shakespeares plays. How about Charlie and...Alex be couple number one." Mr. Gordon
said with one of those evil grins that only teachers can give. I didn't really know
Alex all that well but I looked over in his direction. He was a couple inches taller
than me and had short, dirty blonde hair. His eyes were this really weird shade of
blue. Almost like an icy blue mixed with a deep ocean blue. He noticed me staring at
him and smiled. I smiled back and put my attention back on what the middle aged
teacher was saying. I couldn't concentrate though. I kept thinking about that
morning. When the class finally ended, Alex met me and walked out of the room with
"So, what scene do you want to do?" He asked as they both dodged a couple of jerks
that where shoving each other in the hallway. At that moment one of the jerks plowed
directly into me and I was knocked right into Alex. He caught me and gentley set me
"You all right?" He asked, concern etched into both his eyes and his voice. I nodded
and we continued walking.
"I don't really care what scene we do." I said with a sigh. It wouldn't matter
anyway. I would probably quit school in a couple months anyway. At least until after
the kid's born. He just nodded thoughtfully and continued to walk beside me.
"Alright. I guess we can decide that later. Where so you want to meet to practice?"
He asked as we, yet again, dodged some guy who was jogging through the hallway after
"Well, I guess you could come to my apartment. My roomate works Tuesdays, Thursdays,
and the weekends so she won't bother us." I reason. He nods and I ask for a pen and
write down my address on a piece of paper and handed it to him. He smiled and walked
across the hall and went into another room. I sighed and walked into my class. This
is going to be a long day.
