That week went by too damn quickly. It was Monday, and it was raining. It totally
matched my mood.I was waiting in the truck with June.I was waiting for aunt Marg to
bring me to school on my first day.I was scared shitless.Really.I was.
"Don't worry about it,Ave," she assured me."Kids around here are a lot nicer
than back there."
I wanted to believe her,I really did.But I didn't.I believed that everyone would
hate me and there would be a person too similar to Cody who would enjoy beating me up
even more than Cody did.I believed that I'd come home with a bunch of bruises and
cuts on my first day. That's what I believed.
Aunt Marg got into the truck."All ready?" she smiled, trying to boost up the
cheerfulness in me.Not working.
"I am!" June grinned.
"Everything will be fine,Avery," she rubbed my arm.
"I hope," I said,quietly.
We got to June's school first. It was called Laieville Elementary.Creative name
for a school, dontcha think?Aunt Marg took June inside while I sat out in the
truck, watching the rain pour down the side of my window.I turned on my iPod and put
on some happy music. It's sad to me that my definition of happy music consists of
Slipknot, As I Lay Dying, and Suicide Silence.Doesn't that sound like the happiest
Aunt Marg came back out about ten minutes later."One down, one to go," she
laughed as she got inside, turning on the windshield wipers.
"Yup..." I shrugged.I was trying to act calm on the outside, but inside my heart
was screaming "PLEASE DON'T DO THIS TO ME!".
After twenty minutes of silence,we were at Laieville High.It was fucking
huge, which got me even more scared.
"Come on,Ave..." aunt Marg opened her door.I opened mine,as slowly as
possible, trying to stall.I eventually got out and followed my aunt towards the
It was pretty much empty as we got inside.A few kids here and there, but other
than that,no.I guessed class had already started.Aunt Marg found the office, and we
went into it.
"Good morning!" an overjoyed secretary greeted us.
"Good morning," aunt Marg replied, not as enthusiastic."I'm here to register my
nephew for school."
"Yes.He's living with me while his mother works out some of her problems," Marg
"She's a crackhead," I let it slip.I couldn't help it.She was a crackhead,and I
didn't care who knew.
"Avery..." Marg looked at me."Anyhow,I'm here to register him for school."
"Okay, can you just come over here for a minute?I've got to get some information
about his previous schooling and contact information," the secretary explained."Young
man,you can just take a seat over there." She pointed to a chair that looked like the
bad kids chair.
As they went into another room to discuss me,I sat down and played with a piece
of string hanging from my bookbag.A girl that looked about my age with black and
purple hair entered the room. She laid something that looked like an attendance sheet
on the secretary's desk.
"So,what didja do?" she asked.I didn't think she was actually talking to me,so I
didn't answer back."Not the talkative type, huh?" she turned around and looked at me
with bright green eyes.
"Oh!Hey.Sorry.Didn't think you were talking to me," I smiled a little.
"Um,it's only you and I here..." she laughed.
"Right.Well,I didn't do anything.I'm new here."
"You'd better believe it," I winced.
"Don't be.People are cool here,"
"Are you one of them?" I asked.
"I guess you could say that," she giggled."I'm Skye."
