A young boy was being badly mistreated at the orphanage where he lived back not long
after the Civil War. One day he fled and took refuge with some women he had
befriended and who resided in a dormitory on the college campus. The students were
subject to periodic checks by the headmistress, and one snowy winter night when they
suddenly realized that a room check was imminent, they quickly opened a window and
hid the boy on the ledge outside. The headmistress stayed much longer than usual and
engaged the women in long conversations. After she left, they looked out the window,
but could find no trace of the child. They even went outside to see if he had fallen
into a snowbank, but there was no trace of him to be seen. Not long after his
disappearance, a blue-faced apparition of the boy began to manifest out on the ledge
where he had vanished earlier. Other subsequent occupants of the room asserted to
have seen this frozen image, and the phenomenon persists to this day, with many
residents and visitors professing to have seen the frozen child staring into the room
longing to return to its warmth and comfort.
