and we continue.
Zane wasn't sure whether he should tell Avery or not. After all, this was the first
time he'd seen her in almost ten years. How could he know if he could trust her?
Just because we were friends then, doesn't mean it's the same now. But part of
him wanted to be close to her again. He was glad that he had run into her. His mom
had said that there was a chance that they might be in some classes together, but it
wasn't likely. Sitting silently, he watched Avery and that other girl wait in line to
get their food.
"Oh my gosh Ave! You were talking to that new guy from history!" Melanie whispered.
She didn't want to be too loud, Zane was just sitting a couple tables away.
Avery didn't know how to respond. Obviously Melanie didn't know that Avery knew him,
but how could she explain that? Oh yeah, I'll just tell her that my best friend
from California who I haven't since first grade magically reappeared in my life on
the other side of the country. "Um, yeah. What about it?"
"Well, do you like him? I mean, you're not usually one to just go up and talk to
"No, I don't like him like that. You see, Zane-"
"Cool, because I think he's pretty hot, and for you to be talking to him, he must be
Avery rolled her eyes. Oh brother. Melanie was always flirting with somebody,
usually a different guy each day. "Go right ahead."
Melanie squealed. "Yes!" The two paid for their lunches, and walked over to the
empty table Zane was sitting at.
"Mind if we sit here?" Avery asked. He took a bite of his sandwich and shook his
head. "Zane, this is Melanie, Melanie, Zane."
"Hey!" said Melanie. "So, Zane, what are your hobbies?" Again, Avery rolled her
eyes. She really wanted to ask Zane why he was here, he had almost told her, but they
couldn't really talk about it with Melanie here. She gave him a look that said "Just
go along with it, we'll talk later."
"I like skateboarding. And music." He answered. And on went lunch. Melanie asking
typical icebreaker questions, Zane responding, Melanie giggling and commenting on how
cool that was. Avery sat there in silence for most of lunch, not wanting to get
involved between the two. Before lunch was over, she got up to throw away her tray,
and upon her return to the table, she passed Zane, who was also throwing away his
trash. "Meet me here after school." She nodded and sat back down. Thankfully, Melanie
hadn't heard him, or she would have tagged along too, and they would never get to
actually talk. When the bell rang, the three headed off to their classes. For the
rest of the day, Avery didn't have any classes with Zane, and the day just seemed to
i'm on a roll. =D
