The sun was starting to rise by the time the girls got a good distance out
of the city. They were all panting heavily.
"haa...haa...whew! Quite a jog, eh girls?" Shiki said, trying to sound cheerful. How
they were going to get to the rockies, Mana didn't know, but they had to start
"Sera, you took geography. Which way is the rocky mountains?"
Sera pointed straight ahead, at a bunch of glittering parts, almost out of sight.
"They're to the northwest, but it will be easier to go to the north, then go west.
The great lakes are ahead of us. we'll start there." The distance of the great lakes
were so staggering,Mana nearly stopped breathing. But then she remembered what
Eichiro said last night...
"We have to get there as quickly as possible!" Mana started to dash down the highway
they were following with a new energy she had never felt before.
"Mana, wait!" Sera called from behind. Mana screetched to a halt.
"Mana, we're too tired to go now. Can we rest a bit?" Mana looked at her two friends.
Indeed they looked bushed.
"Sorry you two. You're tired. I am too. We'll take a break before we go." Mana jogged
back to her companions. She sat down and checked what she had packed. Enough food
raided from the orphanage fridge to last about a month, her Flute,an extra pair of
"You only brought that much?" Sera says, looking over at the pack's contents.
"Yeah,Thought I only packed for myself...I didn't expect you and Shiki to come with
Sera made a worried face.
"I also brought my savings from over the years." Mana got out a wallet from her
pocket. She had over 200$ worth of savings in it. -she has had several jobs to keep
her alive over the years.-
"Whoa...you have so much money...what bank did you rob?" Mana smiled as she put the
wallet back into her pocket. They would have to find a better way to get around.
Maybe when they make it to another city, they would buy a bike...
By the time they got going again,it was mid-morning. They ran down the side of the
highway, feeling akward as drivers stared at them. Mana started to pant. Sera ran up
"A tourbus is heading our way. Perhaps we can hitch a ride!" Mana didn't like the
idea of Hitch hiking, but the next city could be over 10 kilometres away...
"OK,lets go! C'mon Shiki!" Boldly, they ran out into the freeway as the tourbus drove
past. The swiftly jumped on the back and climbed on top. Sera was right about hitch
It's a lot easier then running. now all they had to do was wait till they got to the
The ride payed off. Before sunset, they were in a small town. They all jumped off the
roof of the bus onto the lawn of a person's house. Mana must have been crazy. She
jumped off the roof of a moving bus! but, nonetheless, she and her friends were not
majorly hurt. What town were they in? but, that wasn't really important. what was
more important now was sleep and a bicycle. But,where could they rest? They were in
an unknown town, they didn't want to spend money on a hotel...they decided to walk
around town until they found a place to rest. There were a lot less buildings then in
New York. It was unnerving for Mana. Before long,it was night, and the girls were
forced to sleep on park benches. It would have to do.
Mana woke up with the sun beaming down on her face. She had slept in late! She
swiftly woke her companions and got ready to face the day. They tried to casually
walk down to the downtown of the place. Before long, they reach a sport store. When
they go in,they saw a girl at the front desk. She was writing something on a piece of
paper. she gave it to the store clerk, and he read it promptly.
"A bicycle? Sure thing, miss mute!" He said with a chuckle. The girl was a mute! Mana
had never known a mute before. The store clerk helped get a bike off the racks. the
mute notices the three. She walks up to them and smiles.
The mute spoke! Mana couldn't read this girl very well. Sera was in just as much
"Wait a minute. I though you were mute."
The girl shook her head, her apple red hair swaying.
"Not completly mute."
Mana started to understand that she could speak, but not full sentences. Mana spoke
"What's your name?"
"Me? I'm Mana and these are my friends,Shiki and Sera. What is your name?"
The girl was about to speak, when the storeclerk walked up behind her, Blocking the
way into the store.
"I'm sorry ladies, but if you're not going to buy anything, I'll have to kick you out.
I don't tolorate loiterers."
It was Shiki's turn to talk now.
"We're not loitering. we came for a bicycle for my brother." She lied. The store
clerk put a hand on his chin.
"And these are your sisters?" he said, gestering to Mana and Sera.
"Yes,it's a birthday present. Will you let us see your bikes?" The store clerk steps
out of the way.
"Sure, go right ahead. Sorry." They went to the bikes and chose a green mountain bike
with pegs on the back wheel for passengers. When they bought the bike and some
helmets, they took the bike out of the store. The mute followed them with her own
Mana looked at her.
She pointed to herself. She was telling Mana her name.
"You lie to storeclerk?" Kiyomi said with a sad expression to Shiki. Shiki looked
"You lied. You travel country."
Mana was puzzled.
"How can you tell?"
"Being half-mute,Y tell difference between lie and truth. Can go with you?"
Before Mana could even begin to wonder how she could tell the truth from lies, Sera
answered Kiyomi's question.
"Sure. We'll have to use your bike as well as ours. We'll swap stories along the
way." She put on her helmet and sat into the bike seat. Shiki put hers on and climbed
on the back of Sera's bike. Mana and Kiyomi did the same. With Mana being Kiyomi's
backseat driver, she chatted with Kiyomi.
"You sure your parents won't mind you coming with us?"
"No parents. Died long time ago. Never liked them."
Mana felt a bit embarressed of asking as the now four rode towards the great lakes.
What would they find there?
