I started to smell a blood, and I saw a nice crimson liquid dripping from my face
onto the concrete.
Cody began to laugh."God,Alex.You are so ugly...see you tomorrow," he waved and
walked away, leaving me dizzy and helpless.
I had to sit down for a few minutes, but when I regained consciousness,I got up
and continued to walk home.I kicked a rock along the way, feeling like an idiot as I
I got to my house about half an hour later. As I opened the door,I heard my
mother screaming.Probably at one of my siblings, knowing mom.She spent 40% of her time
yelling at us.The other 60% was spent curled up on the sofa, drinking alcohol like it
was going out of style.
"JUNE,GO TO YOUR ROOM!I DON'T WANT TO SEE YOUR FACE AGAIN TODAY!" Yep.She was
definitely fighting with one of my three siblings.June always knew how to get on
June was my annoying ten year old sister. She was an ADHD child, which meant she
threw daily tantrums, because my mother was too cheap to buy her any medication for
it.She usually got her own way, too,at least with our grandparents, just because of her
I had two other siblings as well.Emily was my twin, even though we were nothing
alike. We might have looked alike, but if it was based on personality, you
wouldn't know we were related,let alone twins.Emily was a "goody-goody-two-shoes" (at
least that's what our relatives refer to her as,although she's a huge slut that had
slept with half of the football team). She was on the cheerleading squad, and that's
why they have such a bad reputation. She had long, silky, black hair and pale blue
eyes, and a lot of the guys at school were after her.Me,on the other hand...well,I
have black hair that's in my face and the same colored eyes, but the only guy that was
after me was Cody. And not for the same reason.
Brendan was my brother. Most of the time I wish he wasn't,but things had never
turned out the way I'd wanted them to.Brendan was sixteen and probably the biggest
jerk ever.He was another one who got a lot of dates. Why?Well, girls get hauled in by
his blonde side-swept hair and teal eyes, but really? He's an ass.He laughed and made
fun of me all of the time for the most stupid reasons and never really gave a damn
whether I was alive or dead. It's sad to know this guy used to make me smile. It's also
sad to know I used to look up to him.
My mother hadn't always been a bad mother, either.I remember when I was about six
or seven, and we used to go to the park all of the time.We used to go to the ice cream
shop and rent movies and when I wanted to play ninjas, mom played too.She wasn't
always uncaring and drunk. She once was a mother who cared for her kids. But that was a
long time ago. That was before my father ruined her.
I didn't remember much of my dad.He used to take me to baseball games, but that's
about all he did.He didn't have a job,he didn't have a life.The only thing he had was
family, but he let that go as well.I remember he was there for my eighth birthday
party, and then he just disappeared.Gone.I've asked my mother time and time again
where he went, and she would just tell me to shut up,and say that I didn't have a
Anyway, where was I?Oh.Right.I walked into my house to the sound of my mother's
crackly voice. It went right through me.I dropped my bookbag down by the living room
entrance.I shook my head at the madhouse I'd just entered and went to get an ice
"What happened to your face?" mom asked, looking kind of disgusted as I
entered the kitchen.
"Nothing, mom.Leave me alone," I pushed through and opened the freezer.I grabbed
an ice pack and stuck it to my cheek.
Emily walked into the kitchen and screamed as soon as she saw me."EW!What's that
on your neck?Nevermind. It's just your face.Hey mom,do I really have to call this
faggot my twin?"
Faggot. How many times did I hear this word in a run of a day?The word
rang in my ears and I felt like punching someone's lights out.
"Yes,you do." I wished she would suck it up and get over the fact that we both
came out of our mother's womb around the same time, and spent nine months together
before that.I wasn't too happy about it,either.
"You're such a loser," Emily rolled her eyes.
"Who did that to you, anyway?" she asked,as she rummaged through the fridge.
"Your ex-boyfriend.CODY BRENTON," I said in a loud tone.Emily hated when I
mentioned any of her exes. She had a lot,but I remembered most of them.
She rolled her eyes again and laughed."If that jerk can beat you up,you know
"You weren't there,so why don't you go eat your life away or do something useful
instead of obsessing over my black eye," I smiled.
Before she could speak,I left the kitchen, feeling useless in there.I trudged up
to my bedroom,which was a mess.Seriously.I couldn't even see my floor anymore.But I
didn't care enough to clean it up.Messy was my lifestyle.Plus,I was a mess,so my room
kinda matched.No biggie.
I went straight at my homework.Mr.Ryan,my math teacher, always assigned too much
homework. But the good thing about being an anti-social freakshow with no friends
(besides my goldfish,Killjoy) is that it gives you more time to focus on
studies.Nerdy emo.Just keeps getting better,doesn't it?
So,I finished up my math homework in a matter of ten minutes, while most others
took over an hour.What if I told you I'm a straight A student?Hard to believe,isn't
it?You'd be surprised about me.There's a lot about me you don't know thanks to
I put away my math books and started on my English report. My topic was
drugs,which I didn't know a lot about,considering I didn't do them.Well,I tried weed
with my cousin about three years ago,but it tasted (and smelled) like crap,so I
chickened out.I haven't visited him since.
So,I began working on my essay.I need a computer to research the topic, and the
only computer in the house was in Brendan's room, and according to him,"no emo's
allowed".And yes.He even had a sign hung to his door that had an "emo" stickman with
a razor in his hand.Wow.Creative,huh?
Whatever,I thought to myself.I've got work to do.
I knocked on his door three times, hearing nothing but Gears of War on his xbox.
"Yeah?" he called after a good thirty seconds.
"I gotta use the computer. Please?" I tried to be polite, but it was
hard,considering it was Brendan.
"Get lost,Avery.I'm busy," Yeah.Brendan had a full fucking schedule.
"Please?It's for my report.I'll be like,ten minutes."
"Go away,I said.Jesus,Avery, take a fucking hint," he muttered, but loud enough
for me to hear.
No point in arguing.I ran downstairs to find mom on the phone.I asked
myself who in the world would possibly want to talk to her.
"Mom?" I whispered.
"Hold on," she mouthed with an annoyed look on her face."Yeah, that's what I was
thinking.They're too much for me."
I sat at the kitchen table and listened to my mother's conversation. She was
talking about how something was too much for her,and she couldn't handle or afford it
any longer.I guessed she was talking about her pills. She had about fifteen different
bottles. And that was just in the bathroom cabinet.God only knows where else she had
When she finally got off of the phone, she glared at me."What,Ave?That was an
important phone call."
"Sorry.I really need to use Brendan's computer for a school project, but he won't
let me in his room," I explained.
"Maybe Brendan wants some privacy," mom gave me a drugged look, and I wondered if
she was high.
"He's just playing xbox. And I need the computer. Why did you put it in his
room?Nobody but him is ever allowed to use it."
"I don't know,Avery.I don't remember.Just go to the library or something," she
"Okay,mom," I rolled my eyes.I'd argue and try to prove a point,but I wouldn't
get anywhere with it.Mom had always taken Brendan's and Emily's side, and left June
and I with nothing.Absolutely nothing.
