The creature gnashes its teeth in a most rude and violent manner, but I force the
bit into its mouth just the same. It growls deep in its throat, and the anger pours
from it in the form of a thin red haze. A chilly midnight breeze bites through the
haze as I finish harnessing the creature, and, having completed this task, I crouch
atop the wiry carriage seat and send the creature lurching forward with a sharp crack
of the willow branch.
I am wearing my favorite pink dress, the one with rose-like embroidery all down the
front, like someone dumped cheerful blossoms all over me. The carriage bumps along
down the road, and I hold on tight; no time for falling tonight. If I don't reach the
hospital by morning, I might die again.
A faint and giggly melody has begun to play in the back of my mind, tickling my brain
with its teasing music. I shrug my shoulders to brush it away, but it persists, and
soon I give in and hum along to it.
I have shallow veins, you see. And giving in is far easier than anything that might
force my heart to race, sending thick blood shooting through those delicate veins,
tearing me apart from the inside out.
