"Sergeant, this is Doctor Longacre. She's only voluntary, on work experience, but
she's already one of the best. And my best friend, too."
Kari was leant over the body, her hair tied up in a messy ponytail as she poked a
finger through the bullet hole, trying to find the bullet. She recognised the voice
as Skye's, but wasn't interested enough in the Sergeant to look up from the body,
which was now going slightly green and starting to smell. She needed answers fairly
soon, or the body would fester and not only would it be disgusting to work with, most
of the evidence will have rendered useless. She sensed someone standing beside and
slightly behind her, and figured that it must be the Sergeant, since Skye always made
a beeline for her notes.
"Aha! Finally!" Kari grinned, trying not to breathe in too much as she raised the
spinal cord a little to retrieve the bullet. She stood up straight and dropped it
into a small metal petri dish, the clang resounding about the mortuary like the bells
of Oxford cathedral.

Kari dried her hands on her lab coat, walking back over to the body. She nodded,
"Doctor Kari Longacre." She smiled, holding out her hand to shake as she approached
him again. He frowned slightly, making her smile falter. "What?"
"Kay-ay-ar-eye?" He spelled, and she nodded,
"Yes... Wh- Ah!"
Her shin hit something, and she fell forwards, bracing herself before landing face
first in decomposing torso- When she felt something around her waist, holding her
The voice was gentle, but... unsteady, somehow. She felt her heart skip slightly as
his breath was warm on her cheek. It was his arm that she felt around her, catching
her before she fell. He took one more breath, a heavy one, before speaking.
"My name's Val Dulce."
Val... Val... where had she heard that name bef- Then it hit her harder than
lightning. She swallowed, looking up at him, her wide emerald eyes meeting his deep
It was him.
Oh God, it was him.
Val frowned, concern touching his gentle features, "Kari? Kari, are you alright?
His words trailed off into the blackness, and she murmured an "Oh God..." before her
legs gave way and Val lowered her to the ground, sitting with her cradled in his
"I've found you...."
