I don't think the world will literally end. But I've always said that the way we
veiw the world might come to a close. If SETI succeeds, and we find out that
someone else has been using radio waves, then we would veiw our place in the universe
in such a new way that it would be as if our old humanity had "died". It's just that
something else would replace it.
I've just thought of a new way this could happen. So many differnt cultures have said
that the world would end between twenty twelve aqnd twenty wenty four, they actualy
base their concept of time on it. The world doesn't have to end, but for these
culutures to continue as is something has to happen. A volcanoe. Solar flares.
Because if nothing happens... Something will happen. If peoples religous faith
involves great change in twenty twelve, then that not happening could lead to people
abandoning their faith, or generally feeling lied to by there ancestors.
People have been twisting the words of scientists so that science seems to support
these doom theories. If nothing happens, will people abandon science?
Humans need to beleive something. There is a part of the brain that does nothing but
give us a sense of what is our bodies, and what is The Everything Else. If a
significant number of people lose faith in science, religion, and their cultures,
where will we be?
On a side note- I really wish people would stop using Hurricane Katrina as a sign the
these proficies are coming true. Because, and I'm going to be honest, there were
hurricanes back then too. It wouldn't take much thinking for anyone to assume
hurricanes would be around today.
It wouldn't take much creativity for anyone to say that there will be big
hurricanes while other bad things are happening. Most of these theories lump fire
raining up into the sky along with the Great Storm that everyone says is Katrina; if
a bunch of planes were shot out of the sky at the same time then I suppose I'd buy
into the idea of "well what about Katrina? That prooves it!". As it is though,
I really think Katrina was a horrible disaster, caused by global warming. Hurricane
Katrina was not the end of the world.
I'd love some comments.
