She was walking along one of her favorite paths in the forest, thinking happy
thoughts and carrying a picnic lunch in her left hand. But something was strange...

She just couldn't throw the feeling that something was following her. But every time
she looked back, there was nothing there but the trees, leaves waving greetings at
her happily as they dappled the ground with oblong shadows.

Feeling somewhat uncomfortable, she kept walking along the path to the river
crossing: on the other side was a paddock where she might be able to borrow a horse,
as she sometimes did. 

When she got to the river, she decided to eat before crossing so that she wouldn't

chase her.

As she ran through the river, she wondered, Is it my destiny? Why did this
happen to me instead of another girl? Am I crazy?

She slipped on a stone and lost her balance; she fell into the river but clambered
back onto the stone as though her life depended on it.

She looked back and with a rush she saw that it was gaining.

Augusta was just a normal girl on her summer vacation.

Until it happened.

One day, after she had been trapping grouse in the forest, she washed her hands in
the stream on her way home. When she got to the barn, she looked around.
     "Leo, there you are!"
Her favorite cat. But as it turned around, she saw that it was instead the irritable
Pantera, his twin sister-cat. Augusta was bored, though, so she decided to cuddle
Pantera instead. As she picked her up, Pantera bit her as hard as she could.
     "OW! Stupid cat!" she roared.
Her hand felt like fire, so she went inside and washed it.
Augusta was just a normal girl on her summer vacation.

Until it happened.
