*beep, beep* *beep, beep*
The noise of a pager resounds
Intensifying as it nears and fading
With the vanishing of a man dressed in white
Running across a narrow hallway of large hospital,
He hurries to get to his next patient in time,
But as he nears a turn,
Time pauses for a split second,
When he passes her,
Unable to ignore his task at hand and stop to converse,
He carries on disappointed,
Knowing that he will see her again,
If only for a moment
Once the day is over the man hurries home,
Driving late into the night,
Trying to salvage however small a moment he can have with her.
When he gets home,
He finds lovingly prepared food on the table,
And finds her asleep on the couch near by
As he begins to lift her to take her to bed,
She half consciously welcomes him home,
Before falling sound asleep again
He joins her later on, but not before preparing for the next day
The next day arrives and he decides to leave work early,
And prepares for her arrival
By the time that she arrives home early in the afternoon,
Saying very little, he takes her hand and leaves the house.
Confused and slightly scared she ask where they are headed,
But he simply replies, “You’ll understand once were there…”
And continues to drive silently
Hours pass as he persist through the night,
Driving cities away from home,
On a virtually barren road
Unable to stay awake,
She starts dozing off,
Until eventually sleep consumes her.
Persisting through the night,
He drives 10 hours before reaching their destination.
Opening the door for her,
He begins to softly wake her up
She starts wobbling onto her feet,
With relatively closed eyes
Not yet able to see the surroundings
After walking for a while,
As her eyes adapt to the scenery,
She begins to fully awaken
Looking up she sees an enlarged moon lighting the night sky,
Dwarfing the immense stars
To her right side she views a chain of mountains
Which seem to carry on far into the horizon
Surrounding her are thousands of flowers, blooming in the moonlight,
Creating their own light as they release pollen
He stops and faces her before saying,
“I’m sorry; I know you don’t like surprises or traveling,
but I could not find enough flowers to give you.
Although we don’t see each other for most of the day, I am always thinking of you.
You may not remember what today is yet, so I’ll remind you.”
He leans over to sneak in a soft kiss before saying,
“Happy Anniversary”
